What it is
Radiesse by Merz is a biostimulatory injectable designed to provide immediate support while stimulating your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. It works in a layered way: there is some support right away, and then your own skin typically keeps building on it.
You get the benefit of immediate improvement with results that continue developing.
How it works
A traditional hyaluronic acid filler holds volume in place where it is put. Radiesse works differently by helping improve the quality and structure of the skin itself over time.

Depending on the treatment plan, Radiesse can be used to restore facial structure and definition or hyperdiluted to improve skin firmness, elasticity, and overall quality. The structural and hyperdiluted uses are different, and they are planned differently.
Hyperdiluted means it is thinned down and spread over a wider area, so the point is skin quality and firmness rather than adding structure. With the hyperdiluted version, the change typically shows up gradually over weeks and keeps developing for months.
Structural treatment is typically a single visit with maintenance later on; the hyperdiluted skin-quality version is more often a short series spaced weeks apart. Your injector sets the plan at your consultation.

The appointment

The usual after-effects are swelling, redness, tenderness, and some bruising at the injection sites. For most people, this settles within days to weeks.
Bruising is common and can take up to about a week to fade, so most people plan around anything important. Firm lumps at an injection point can happen and are usually temporary; tell your injector if you feel one.
Unlike a hyaluronic acid filler, Radiesse cannot be dissolved afterwards, so it is worth being sure before you start. It can also show up on a scan, so it is worth mentioning to your doctor or radiologist if you have imaging later.
Serious problems are rare, and they are the reason injectables belong with a trained medical injector.

For the first day or so, the usual advice is to skip hard workouts, heat, and a lot of sun, and go easy on alcohol until any swelling and redness have settled. Most people are told to leave the area alone during early healing, with no pressing and no massaging unless your injector tells you to.
