Erbium Laser Resurfacing with the Rohrer Spectrum Laser is an advanced ablative laser treatment that precisely removes damaged surface layers of skin while encouraging your body to create fresh collagen and elastin. It is ablative. Healing is part of the plan.
The beauty of Erbium is its precision: its energy is absorbed almost entirely by the water in your skin.
One treatment can resurface and remodel because the surface layer is removed while controlled warmth below it prompts new collagen. This treatment is part of anti-aging and skin rejuvenation care for texture, tone, surface damage and visible scarring.

What it treats
It is an excellent option for addressing fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, acne scars, surgical scars and other textural imperfections. The treatment can also be used for hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation.
For pigment and scars, resurfacing helps improve the appearance. If your concern is more about redness patterns or sun-damage color, we may talk with you about IPL Photofacial instead.

In general, resurfacing typically helps improve the appearance of settled surface scarring, and deeper scarring usually needs a deeper plan. Scars that are still changing are a different conversation.

For an Erbium treatment, numbing cream is typically enough; deeper work usually gets more. We will not call it nothing or rush you through it.

Aftercare for any ablative treatment is typically about keeping the skin moist and protected while it closes. Sun protection afterwards is part of that plan.

This treatment is usually for someone bothered by texture, tone, surface damage or settled scarring who is willing to plan for recovery. If you want change but you are nervous about an ablative laser, that is normal, and it is exactly why the consultation comes first.
There are also times when a provider will typically ask you to wait. Recent acne medication, anything active on the skin, a breakout, an infection or a cold sore can change the timing, and settled scarring is the target here, not active acne.
A history of raised or keloid scarring is one of the things a provider will typically ask about. Because this treatment works by healing, anything that slows healing typically matters. That is why the health questions at consultation are not a formality.
If you get cold sores, say so at the consultation, because it is standard to plan for that in advance. If you have had another resurfacing treatment or a peel recently, that usually changes the timing, and we may talk about how this fits with Light Chemical Peels.
Skin tone changes how an ablative laser is set. On deeper tones, the usual approach is a gentler setting and a careful look first, with a patch test where that is standard. That is exactly what the consultation is for.

Because Erbium Laser Resurfacing is ablative, recovery is real. I would rather be plain with you about that than make it sound smaller than it is. The treatment depth is chosen against the recovery time you are comfortable with.

Most people say early healing feels like a strong sunburn: warm, tight, red, sometimes itchy. Recovery from an Erbium treatment is typically around a week. It moves with the depth you and your provider choose.

Peeling usually starts around the end of the first week. The usual advice is to leave any crusting alone and let it come off on its own. New skin typically comes in pink and settles gradually.

As a rule, the deeper the treatment, the more it does and the longer the skin takes to settle. That is the whole reason we slow down, look closely and choose depth with you instead of handing everyone the same plan.
Erbium vs CO2
We resurface with Erbium on the Rohrer Spectrum. In general, Erbium and CO2 lasers are both ablative lasers; Erbium typically takes less tissue per pass and leaves less heat behind, so it usually means less swelling and a shorter recovery than CO2, and typically less tightening too.
Resurfacing lasers are also typically delivered across the whole surface or in tiny columns, and the second usually heals faster.
Lighter routes
Resurfacing is not one setting, and skin does not always need the same route. Your consultation helps us choose between the ablative Erbium treatment, the lighter LaserFACIAL and Venus Viva.
